BURU ALLELUIA by Eke Chijindu F. Hedges — Lyrics
About BURU ALLELUIA
"Buru Alleluia" is a vibrant, high-energy Igbo praise song that perfectly captures the joy of thanksgiving. With a title that evokes the image of carrying or bringing an Alleluia to God, the lyrics center on offering profound gratitude. Opening with a reflective question—asking what we could possibly use to thank the Lord—the piece quickly builds into a rhythmic declaration of praise, acknowledging God's greatness and our reliance on Him.
What makes this arrangement particularly special is its deep roots in Nigerian choral highlife. The composer weaves in percussive vocal lines where the singers mimic the sounds of traditional drums and shakers with rhythmic syllables like "ko ko titi" and "dudu du dum." This creates an infectious, driving beat entirely from the choir's voices, making it a thrilling piece to rehearse and perform in the choir loft.
Choirs often bring this out during the Offertory procession or as a lively Recessional hymn when the congregation is in a mood to dance. The repeated calls to carry Alleluia to God ("bugara Chukwu") and the soaring declarations of His goodness ("Chineke mu idinma") make it an unforgettable anthem of celebration for feast days and special thanksgiving Masses.
