Brockes-Passion by Georg Philipp Telemann — Lyrics
About Brockes-Passion
Telemann's Brockes-Passion is a monumental sacred oratorio for solo voices and orchestra, setting a German text by Barthold Heinrich Brockes. This excerpt focuses on the final moments of Christ's crucifixion. The musical setting opens with the Evangelist recounting the events, followed by Jesus's cry of "Eli, Eli, lama asaphtani!" The text then shifts to the "Glaübige Seele" (Believing Soul), who reflects on the Savior's suffering and thirst, interpreting it as a thirst for human salvation. The solo parts for tenor, alto, and bass are demanding, requiring expressive declamation to convey the dramatic narrative and theological weight of the text. This work offers a profound musical meditation on the Passion story.
