Bringing in the Sheaves!

"Bringing in the Sheaves" is one of those classic hymns that instantly transforms the mood in a Nigerian parish, especially during our annual harvest thanksgiving and bazaar Sundays. When the choir strikes up this familiar tune, you can almost see the congregation getting ready to dance forward. The words speak directly to the heart of Christian labor and reward, reminding us that the hard work of faith, even when done in tears or difficult seasons, eventually yields a joyful harvest.

In the choir loft, we usually take this piece with a bright, steady marching tempo that encourages the whole church to join in. The verses carry a beautiful progression, moving from the bright morning of "sowing seeds of kindness" through the shadows and "winter's chilling breeze," right up to the final promise of welcome by the Master. It is a journey from effort to ultimate joy.

We love using this during the Offertory or as a lively recessional hymn when the community is celebrating a successful year. The refrain is so catchy and triumphant that by the time we reach the second "We shall come rejoicing," the voices of the congregation are usually ringing out just as loudly as the choir's.
