BIA MMUNSO by Mabo P Peter — Lyrics
About BIA MMUNSO
“Bia Mmụnsọ” is a heartfelt Igbo invocation to the Holy Spirit, translating to “Come, Holy Spirit.” It is a choral setting of the traditional Pentecost sequence, calling upon the Spirit as the Comforter, the Father of the poor, and the light of our lives. The piece captures the deep yearning of the faithful for divine renewal, asking the Spirit to wash away sin, water the dry places of the heart, and kindle the fire of God’s love where it has grown cold.
Choirs typically sing this piece during Pentecost Sunday, at confirmations, or during moments of prayer and reflection when the congregation seeks the guidance and presence of the Holy Spirit. The arrangement by Mabo P. Peter gives each voice part its own moment to lead the prayer—from the Sopranos calling on the “Father of the poor” to the Basses asking for rest in the heat of struggles—before all voices unite in a final plea for salvation and eternal joy.
Singing this piece brings a sense of profound peace and spiritual awakening to the choir loft. The gradual layering of the voices mirrors the descent of the Spirit, moving the congregation to a place of quiet reverence and deep trust in God’s comforting presence.
