Charles Villiers Stanford's Benedictus in A major, Op. 12, No. 2, is a substantial setting of the canticle from the Gospel of Luke. Its soaring melodic lines and rich harmonies make it suitable for a high festival or major occasion within the liturgical year. The text, recounting the prophecy of John the Baptist, speaks of God's visitation and redemption of his people, the raising up of a saviour, and the promise of salvation.
