About Bella Fioretta
Jacques Arcadelt was a prolific composer of madrigals. Bella Fioretta is a fine example of this secular Renaissance genre for SATB voices. The Italian text speaks of overwhelming beauty, comparing the beloved Fioretta to the sun. The poet wishes to praise her but finds their sight fails when looking at the sun, and similarly, words fail when contemplating her great beauty. The comparison to Paradise suggests that looking upon Fioretta's face is akin to experiencing the beauty of heaven itself, a powerful and evocative image.
