Filippo Vitale composed Bella Dea for a significant secular consort song, written for SSATTB voices. The text, in Italian, tells a story of love and unrequited affection. It describes a beautiful goddess, hunting amidst fierce beasts, who rejects a shepherd’s plea. He laments her cruelty, his love only intensifying. Eventually, she disdains the heavens and chooses to inhabit beloved shores with her lover, passing blissful hours among the plants. The shepherd is instructed to tell this tale to the proud, beautiful woman who torments his heart, reminding her that a noble heart must always be subject to love.
