About Begrabnislied

Written for SATB choir, Schubert's Begrabnislied is a setting of a German text dealing with death and resurrection. Its mood is reflective and consoling, looking beyond the earthly grave to a future glorification and reunion with God. The lyrics speak of sowing the mortal body in the earth, trusting that it will bloom again and be raised to God. The composer also implores God, the sacrificed one, to strengthen the faithful in their final need, enabling them to face the end with joy. The piece would be appropriate for services of committal or remembrance, offering solace and hope to those mourning.
