About Basse son queste rime
A skilled madrigal composer of the late Renaissance, Ruggiero Giovannelli wrote Basse son queste rime for SATB voices in Italian. The text, by Jacopo Sannazaro, speaks of the singer's lament for a lost love. He keeps his beloved Filli's hair, weeping over it and trying to bind it. The poet laments that his verses are humble and poor, but hopes his tears might move even death if weeping has merit in heaven. He longs for Filli to remember their past happiness, questioning if love is lost crossing the river of death.
