About Ave verum corpus
William Byrd's Ave verum corpus is a profound setting of a familiar Eucharistic text. The Latin words meditate on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ's body, born of the Virgin Mary, which was pierced and from which flowed water and blood. The text implores Jesus for mercy and protection in the hour of death, recalling his humanity and divine sonship.
