About Ave Verum Corpus
Jorge Moreira sets the familiar Latin text of the Ave Verum Corpus. This sacred motet, suitable for SATB choir, draws on a profound devotional tradition. The text, traditionally associated with the Eucharist and Marian devotion, meditates on the real body of Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for humankind. It reflects on the blood and water that flowed from his pierced side, and implores Jesus for mercy and protection in the hour of death. Moreira's setting offers a contemporary voice to this ancient prayer, exploring its rich theological and emotional dimensions through the expressive capabilities of the mixed voice choir.
