Ave maris stella, op.66/25 by Oreste Ravanello — Lyrics
About Ave maris stella, op.66/25
Oreste Ravanello composed this SSA setting of the traditional Marian antiphon, Ave maris stella. The Latin text, a prayer to Mary as the 'Star of the Sea' and 'Mother of God', invokes her intercession for peace, guidance, and protection. It asks her to change Eve's name (undoing original sin) and to advocate for us, so that through her, we may be freed from our sins and always rejoice in seeing Jesus. Ravanello's music sets this ancient text, which is a central part of the Divine Office, for treble voices. The hymn's poetic plea for purity and safe passage towards eternal joy is clearly conveyed in the devotional mood of this sacred work.
