About Ave maris stella in A Flat
This setting of the famous Marian antiphon Ave maris stella, in Latin, is for SATB choir. The text implores Mary as the star of the sea, mother of God, and ever-virgin gate of heaven. It asks her to found us in peace, undoing Eve's naming, and to free the guilty from their chains, bring light to the blind, and ward off all evils. The singers are invited to ask her to show herself a mother, and that through her we might receive prayers from him who was born for us and bore your name. It continues to ask her, as a singular, gentle virgin, to make us chaste and pure, and grant us a clean life and a safe journey, that seeing Jesus we may rejoice forever. The hymn concludes with praise to God the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
