About Ave Christe
This setting of the Latin text Ave Christe is a profound meditation on the Eucharist and Christ's sacrifice. The text addresses Christ as the immolated victim on the cross, the bread of life, and the source of healing and hope for sinners. It moves through addresses to the Incarnate Word, the body of Christ, and finally to a plea for mercy. The composer explores the deep theological meaning of Christ's suffering and redemptive work. Josquin des Prez's SATB setting, though from the Renaissance, feels remarkably immediate. Its devotional text is expressed with a moving sincerity that would lend gravitas to any sacred service.
