Astiterunt reges terrae

Orlando di Lasso paints a powerful scene in Astiterunt reges terrae, drawing on Psalm 2. The opening words describe kings and rulers gathering together in opposition to the Lord and his Christ, a theme of defiance and earthly power challenging divine authority. The composer sets this dramatic Latin text for SATB choir, bringing a sense of weight and gravitas to the defiant pronouncements. This sacred responsory captures the tension and conflict inherent in the biblical narrative through rich vocal textures and compelling musical setting, suitable for choral ensembles seeking to explore significant scriptural texts.
