About Aria di Ruggiero
Raffaello Rontani, a composer of the early Baroque, presents his Aria di Ruggiero for solo voice. This Italian secular song is characteristic of the arias of its time, often dramatic and expressive. The text, sung here in Italian, speaks of a lover's return to the solitude of nature, lamenting a former joy in love now turned to disdain and suffering. The singer's transformation from a follower of love to a scorned, dying lover is palpable, seeking refuge in the shadows as an errant shadow himself. He longs for the knot of his pain to be untied, or for death to release him if love has bound him.
