Apri il mio core, Amore by Giovanni Battista Mosto — Lyrics
About Apri il mio core, Amore
Giovanni Battista Mosto’s Apri il mio core, Amore is a secular madrigal for SSATTB voices, written in Italian. The text, by Cesare Rinaldi, presents a striking conceit: the lover begs Amore (Love) to open his heart, knowing that Love will extract fire from it. Love is then instructed to open the heart of his lady, from which he will draw ice. By combining these contraries, Love will forge a single heart from two, which can then be given to whomever he chooses, specifically to the lady and the speaker. The speaker asserts that he will live securely when their hearts are united, caring for nothing else. The composer’s setting likely explores the dramatic contrast between the heat of the speaker’s passion and the ice of the beloved’s indifference, creating a rich textural interplay for the eight voices.
