ABU UMU ANU

"Abu Umu Anu" (Domestic Animals Carol) is a lively and imaginative Christmas piece by the renowned Nigerian composer Laz Ekwueme. Rather than focusing solely on the shepherds or the angels, this carol turns its attention to the manger itself, playfully asking which of the familiar farm animals were present to witness the birth of the Saviour.

A soloist leads the narrative, calling out to the goat, sheep, chicken, cat, dog, and cow, even inviting the goat to sing praise to the Lord with a joyful "Maa! Maa!" Meanwhile, the rest of the choir provides a rhythmic, percussive accompaniment with the repetitive "Eye, tingelen gele" chant, mimicking the sound of traditional African instruments.
