About Anima dove vai
Philippe de Monte's Anima dove vai is a sophisticated secular madrigal for SSAAAAT. The composer’s intricate scoring here allows for a rich interplay of voices, creating a complex polyphonic texture. The Italian text is a poignant lament in which the soul questions where it is going and why it is being left behind. The speaker feels abandoned, facing a terrible fate, and fears that internal suffering will overcome them. Yet, the soul must follow its destiny toward that which brings joy and pleasure, and the speaker bids farewell, hoping for peace, though acknowledging that peace is impossible in the face of perpetual suffering.
