Anima Christe — Lyrics
About Anima Christe
There is a profound stillness that settles over the church when the choir begins to sing the "Anima Christi." Long cherished as a prayer of thanksgiving after Communion, these ancient Latin words ask Christ for ultimate closeness and protection—to be sanctified by His soul, saved by His body, and hidden within His wounds.
In this straightforward solfa arrangement, the familiar petitions are divided into four gentle verses. Rather than singing the entire text straight through, the choir returns to a central, anchoring refrain: "Sanguis, sanguis Christe inebria me" (Blood of Christ, inebriate me). It is a meditative structure that gives the congregation time to absorb each line. Sung during the quiet moments of the Eucharistic banquet or while kneeling at Benediction, the piece carries a deep sense of devotion and peace.
