About Amor m'inpenna l'ale, e tanto in alto
Alessandro Striggio's Amor m'inpenna l'ale, e tanto in alto is a secular madrigal for SAATTB voices. The text, a sonnet by Luigi Tansillo, describes the poet's soaring ambition, lifted by love to heights where his spirit aspires to storm the gates of heaven. He fears the dizzying altitude, yet his emboldened thoughts are promised eternal honour even if he falls. The poet reflects on others whose daring endeavours met a premature end, but whose names lived on. He concludes that though he may not reach the stars, his life may fail, but his courage will not. This piece demands agility and a keen sense of expressive declamation from its performers.
