About Amor m'impenna l'ale
Philippe de Monte was one of the most celebrated composers of the late 16th century. His secular Italian madrigals are notable for their expressive harmony and sophisticated counterpoint. Amor m'impenna l'ale is a fine example, setting a sonnet in praise of love's power to inspire soaring ambition. The text describes love giving wings to the soul and enabling the singer to ascend to the heavens. Even if such lofty aspirations lead to a fall, the text suggests, the nobility of the attempt ensures eternal honour. This five-voice setting (SSATB) masterfully depicts the soaring flight and defiant spirit of the poem through its rich textures and adventurous harmonic language.
