About Amor' m'ha disfidat' alla bataglia
This Italian secular madrigal for SSAT voices depicts a battlefield of love. The composer describes a lover challenged to combat by Cupid, with his beloved's face as the field of war. He trembles yet hopes, burns yet finds no escape. Her golden hair becomes the bowstring, her glances the arrows, and her bright eyes the loaded arquebuses. His own weapons are high-pitched sighs and humility. The text concludes with the lover surrendering to his lady's grace, crying for peace. This piece would suit a programme of Renaissance part-music exploring themes of courtly love and its accompanying torments and triumphs.
