About Amor, Fortuna
Adrian Willaert was a prominent composer of the Franco-Flemish school. This secular Italian madrigal for SATB voices is a prime example of the genre's expressive power. The text speaks of the torment caused by Love and Fortune, with the narrator feeling afflicted and envious of those who have passed on. The heart is consumed by love, and all comfort is stripped away by fortune, leading to anger and tears. There is no hope of returning to happier times, only a descent from bad to worse. The narrator sees all hope shatter like glass, with their thoughts broken in the midst.
