Amor crudel infido by Andrea Gabrieli — Lyrics
Amor crudel infido
anzi fidel amor pietoso
com'esser può se nel tartareo nido

Ed io dico ch'in cielo

About Amor crudel infido
Andrea Gabrieli's Amor crudel infido is a richly textured secular madrigal for SAATTB voices. The composer masterfully deploys the six parts, creating intricate polyphonic interplay that vividly captures the text's emotional drama. The Italian lyrics explore the paradox of cruel, faithless love, contrasting the supposed torments of lovers with the sweetness of genuine affection. Gabrieli sets these words with a sophisticated harmonic language and contrapuntal skill, drawing the listener into a world of passionate feeling and eloquent expression. This work showcases the expressive potential of the Renaissance madrigal, demanding sensitive musicianship and careful attention to textual declamation from its performers.
