About Amor, che de' mortali ogni cor vede
Andrea Gabrieli, a leading composer of the Venetian school, wrote this secular Italian madrigal for a large vocal ensemble. The text expresses the power of Love, personified as a god armed with bow and arrows, who strikes down those who flee him. Love carries a shield made of Margarita, a symbol of preciousness, whose light outshines gems and gold. This shield, more than any other, pierces hearts of iron, ensuring the soul is not deprived of suffering. The demanding SAAAT,AATTB voicing, with its multiple SATB choirs, allows for rich textural contrast and dynamic interplay, typical of the late Renaissance madrigal tradition.
