Als Jesus geboren war by Bartholomeus Gesius — Lyrics
Die Historia von den Weisen aus Morgenland
im Thon: Ein Kindelein so löbelich
Als Jesus geboren war/
zu Herodes zeiten
Erschein ein Stern hell und klar/
Reichsinnigen Leuten.
Den Weisen in Morgenland/
An dem sie merckten zu hand/
Das ein Kind erschienen/
Ein König geboren wer/
welchem das Jüdische Heer/
Schuldig wer zu dienen.
Und sie namen köstlich Gold/
Myrr/ Weyrauch darneben
Suchten damit seine Huld
im sich zuergeben.
Kommen gen Jerusalem/
sprachen: Zeiget uns das Klein/
Welchs euch soll vertreten/
WIr han gesehn seinen Stern/
kommen nu und woltens gern/
mit Geschenck anbeten.

About Als Jesus geboren war
This German hymn setting by Bartholomeus Gesius recounts the Nativity story, focusing on the journey and adoration of the Magi. The text, sung here by an SATB choir, describes the star appearing to the wise men, their journey to Jerusalem seeking the newborn King, and their adoration with gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense. Gesius's setting would have been used in Lutheran services, offering a narrative musical setting of this familiar biblical event. The music allows the choir to present the unfolding story with clarity and devotion, reflecting the reverence of the Magi's visit.
