About Alma Redemptoris Mater a4
Alma Redemptoris Mater, a Marian antiphon, presents a poignant plea to the Mother of the Redeemer. The text invokes her as the gateway to heaven and the star of the sea, asking her to aid a people striving to rise from falling. It marvels at her role in giving birth to her holy Creator, a virginal birth both before and after her own existence. Receiving the angelic greeting Ave from Gabriel, she is implored to have mercy on sinners. This SATB setting of the sacred Latin text is a devotional work, likely sung as part of a liturgical service.
