Alma perchè t'affliggi? by Giacomo Gorzanis — Lyrics
About Alma perchè t'affliggi?
Giacomo Gorzanis was a composer of secular vocal music in the Renaissance. This Italian madrigal for three voices (ATB) explores a common theme of unrequited love. The text directly addresses the soul, questioning its deep affliction, which is caused by an ungrateful and bitter beloved. The singer laments the cruelty of a woman who does not return the affection of her faithful servant, begging for pity. The singer acknowledges that this ungrateful woman does not know him but warns that she may one day regret her actions. The polyphonic setting would have been intended for private enjoyment among friends or at court.
