About Alleluia. Virtutes caeli
John Sheppard's setting of Alleluia. Virtutes caeli is written for TTBB voices. The Latin text is a Gospel Acclamation, a joyous praise. It opens with the exclamatory Alleluia, followed by the verse invoking the virtues of heaven to venerate the Virgin Mary, contemplating her unique son at the right hand of God the Father, in great power and majesty. This substantial setting provides rich opportunities for vocal colour and dynamic contrast, with the four male voices woven together to create a sonorous and uplifting anthem suitable for liturgical use or concert performance.
