About Al primo sguardo
Marc'Antonio Mazzone's Italian madrigal Al primo sguardo is written for SATB choir. The text speaks of a love struck at first sight, where the beloved's eyes and cruel love cause infernal suffering. The singer pleads that they would be in paradise if only they were not distant from their mistress's beautiful face, their heart stolen and wounded beyond remedy by the golden tresses where love nests. This is a secular piece from the Renaissance tradition of part-music for voices.
