Ahi, chi mi rompe'l sonno by Alessandro Romano — Lyrics
About Ahi, chi mi rompe'l sonno
Alessandro Romano's madrigal Ahi, chi mi rompe'l sonno sets a Petrarchan sonnet describing a vivid dream. The poet is woken from a blissful dream of his beloved, only to have his hopes dashed as he embraces her. The dream was so real that he had been speaking his deepest thoughts to her. She had appeared and offered herself to him, but just as he held her, the sun rose, waking him and killing his heart. This rich SAATB setting in Italian captures the emotional drama of the text, moving from contented slumber to the sharp pain of waking. It is a fine example of secular Renaissance part-music, designed for expressive performance.
