OGWERITSANG ORIM

"Ogweritsang Orim" brings the familiar, quiet reverence of the Agnus Dei into the Ukpe language. Arranged by Abraham Uke, this setting of the "Lamb of God" is sung during the fraction rite, just before the choir and congregation receive Communion. The music carries a steady, prayerful weight, moving at a grave and measured pace that fits the solemnity of the moment.

The structure follows the traditional petition of the Mass. The choir leads the invocation "Ogweri'sang Orim" (Lamb of God), acknowledging the Lord who takes away the sins of the world. This flows into the stacked responses at the end of the piece, where the voices first sing "Resibashibe" (have mercy on us) and finally resolve into the peaceful closing petition, "Ke si Ikwen" (grant us peace).

Noted on the score as being arranged for an ordination thanksgiving Mass in the Catholic Diocese of Ogoja, the piece shows how naturally the universal prayers of the Church can be expressed in local tongues.
