Afuera, aparta zagal by Gabriel Garcia de Mendoza — Lyrics
About Afuera, aparta zagal
Gabriel Garcia de Mendoza's Afuera, aparta zagal is a sacred villancico for SATB choir, written in Spanish. This genre, popular in Spain and its colonies from the 15th to the 18th centuries, typically features religious texts presented in a dramatic, often narrative, style. The text of this work, which includes a dialogue between a character called 'el licenciado Vidriera' and a chorus, paints a vivid picture of the Nativity scene. Vidriera, a glass-like figure, expresses extreme delicacy, fearing he will break at the slightest touch, particularly from the ox and donkey present. The chorus, however, reassures him that he is correct in his assessment, before he ultimately resolves to stay by the ' Niño celestial' all night.
