ADIEMUS by Karl Jenkins / Aifuobhokhan Charles — Lyrics
About ADIEMUS
This unique score brings together two vastly different but equally compelling pieces for the choir loft: the sweeping, ethereal sounds of Karl Jenkins’ "Adiemus" and the vibrant Hausa Communion hymn "Nine Gurasa Mai Rai" (I Am the Bread of Life) composed by Aifuobhokhan Charles.
"Adiemus" is famous for its classical-crossover style, using invented syllables that treat the human voice as an instrument. Though it carries no direct translation, its soaring melodies and rhythmic vocal layers evoke a profound sense of universal praise. Choirs often use it as a striking concert piece or a special anthem, filling the church with a transcendent, cinematic atmosphere that captivates the congregation.
Following this is "Nine Gurasa Mai Rai," which shifts the musical landscape to a joyous, rhythmic Eucharistic celebration. Sung in Hausa, the lyrics call the faithful to the Lord's table ("Yesu yana kiran duka ku sai ku zo bauta" — Jesus is calling everyone to come and worship). It reflects on the promise that whoever eats His body and drinks His blood will have eternal life. With its lively call-and-response structure, this section is perfect for the Communion procession, bringing an energetic and deeply rooted indigenous expression of faith to the Mass.
