Ad cenam agni by Jacobus Vaet — Lyrics

1. Ad cenam Agni providi, stolis salutis candidi, post transitum maris Rubri Christo canamus principi. 2. Cuius corpus sanctissimum in ara crucis torridum, sed et cruorem roseum gustando, Deo vivimus. 3. Protecti paschae vespero a devastante angelo, de Pharaonis aspero sumus erepti imperio. 4. Iam pascha nostrum Christus est, agnus occisus innocens; sinceritatis azyma qui carnem suam obtulit.

About Ad cenam agni

This powerful Latin hymn, Ad cenam Agni, celebrates the Paschal feast. The text describes the Lamb's high feast, where the faithful, clothed in white, pass through the Red Sea to sing to Christ. It recounts the sacrifice of Christ's body and blood, through which we live, and our deliverance from Pharaoh's grasp by the destroying angel. Christ is our Passover, the innocent lamb sacrificed, offering his own flesh. The hymn exclaims that Christ's sacrifice breaks the gates of hell, redeems captive souls, and restores the rewards of life. Finally, it rejoices in Christ's resurrection, his victory over the grave, and the opening of paradise. Composed for SSATTB voices, this sacred office hymn uses the rich sonorities of a double choir to convey the profound theological themes of Easter.
