About Abendlied: Der Tag mit seinem Lichte
Joseph Gersbach's Abendlied is a four-part setting of a devotional German text. The opening stanza reflects on the passing of day into night, with the singer turning their heart to God who created both. The second stanza urges the singer's soul (represented by the "psalter") to praise the divine sustainer for manifold blessings received throughout the day. The final stanza, though incomplete in this excerpt, begins a plea for divine forgiveness of transgressions. This sacred part-song offers a contemplative and grateful reflection on the close of day and the constant presence of divine grace.
