A tout jamais

Romain Bulteau’s A tout jamais is a secular French chanson for two voices. The AT setting opens with the voices entwined in close harmony, creating a rich texture that reflects the text’s declaration of unwavering devotion. The music’s gentle flow and contrapuntal interest mirror the sentiment of two hearts beating as one, bound by a shared and immutable desire. The piece explores the Renaissance ideal of love, where union of spirit is paramount, all set to a melody that is both elegant and heartfelt. This chanson would be a delightful addition to programmes of French vocal music, showcasing the beauty of intimate two-part writing.
