A New Commandment — Lyrics
About A New Commandment
"A New Commandment" is a gentle, enduring setting of Christ’s words from the Gospel of John. It carries a quiet but profound instruction, reminding the congregation of the core of the Christian life: to love one another just as the Lord has loved us. The melody is simple and flowing, making it easy for both the choir and the assembly to internalize the message.
In the choir loft, we often bring this piece out during Holy Week, especially on Holy Thursday for the washing of the feet, where the theme of servant leadership and fraternal charity is front and center. It also serves beautifully as a Communion hymn throughout the ordinary time of the year. The harmony parts are accessible, allowing the voices to blend naturally without overpowering the sincerity of the text. When sung with the longing and warmth the score asks for, it leaves a peaceful impression on everyone gathered.
