About À Dieu dame
The composer bids farewell to a lady of days gone by, because she is no longer in season. Having dismissed him without cause or reason, she is no longer his beloved. He is rejected and must admit it, though if he finds solace elsewhere, he swears he will not regret it. This is a secular French chanson for five voices (soprano, alto, tenor, tenor, bass). The text expresses a lover’s bitter dismissal and acceptance of his fate, finding a wry defiance in his eventual freedom from her capricious will.
